Abstract

Introduction: The current COVID-19 pandemic led many countries in the world to decree quarantines and sanitary isolations to mitigate the spread of the infection. This type of isolation implies multiple changes in the health care model due to the restriction for home visits in prevention and health promotion programs.

Objective: To examine the experience of telehealth in a home breastfeeding program in Colombia.

Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted with MESH terms in Medline-Pubmed and LILACS, books and gray literature. The opinions from professionals in the academic community who are experts in home breastfeeding programs were sought. Mainly experimental articles on telehealth in breastfeeding were classified and analyzed.

Analysis and synthesis of information: Controlled clinical trials and protocols were found. Some telehealth experiments and the experience of using telehealth in the follow-up of a breastfeeding program in Colombia are described.

Conclusions: Colombia adapts to the home breastfeeding program, a model of synchronous telehealth through video calls, which are offered by telephone to patients, one week after hospital discharge, with their informed consent. This activity is carried out by nurses who are experts in breastfeeding and perinatal care with good results. Telehealth and telelactation programs eliminate time and distance barriers between patient and health professional, encourage the practice of exclusive breastfeeding, and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 infection.
