Abstract

Introduction: Acute kidney injury is a frequent complication in critically ill neonates and peritoneal dialysis constitutes one of the therapeutic options in these patients when conservative therapy fails.

Objective: To assess the evolution of a very low birth weight newborn who required peritoneal dialysis due to acute kidney injury secondary to reopening of the ductus arteriosus.

Case presentation: Male newborn of 28.2 weeks of gestational age with birth weight of 1000 grams. The baby required ventilatory assistance from birth due to respiratory distress of prematurity. At five days of life, he presented as a complication a reopening of the ductus arteriosus with hemodynamic repercussions and as a consequence a hypoxic ischemic nephropathy. Given this condition, it was necessary to perform peritoneal dialysis at six days of life. With this procedure renal function was recovered and the existing hydroelectrolyte imbalances were corrected. The only complication he presented in relation to the procedure was hyperglycemia that required treatment with insulin.

Conclusions: Peritoneal dialysis performed in a timely manner favored the recovery of renal function in this very low birth weight neonate, who only presented hyperglycemia as a complication.
