Abstract

Introduction: Gonadal insufficiency or hypergonadotropic hypogonadism is responsible for approximately 40 % of pubertal delays in adolescents. It has diverse causes and variable incidence. It can be congenital or acquired.

Objective: To identify the age at which hypergonadotropic hypogonadism is diagnosed, as well as its causes and response to treatment.

Case report: A study was conducted on three adolescent patients who attended an endocrinology consultation due to the lack of development of secondary sexual characteristics. Gynecological ultrasound, bone age, and hormonal studies were performed, and recommended treatment was prescribed.

Results: The three adolescents studied were diagnosed with hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and hormone replacement therapy was prescribed, which led to sexual development.

Conclusions: The absence of sexual development may be due to endocrine disorders. The diagnosed endocrine cause is female hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. Response to hormone replacement therapy depends on the timing of diagnosis and the cause of the condition. Pubertal development was achieved in all three patients, and complications associated with this condition were avoided.
