Universal Hearing Screening and Comprehensive Hearing Health Management in the Cuban Child Population

Abstract

In Cuba, hearing screening has been conducted in at-risk groups since the 1980s. This hearing assessment was limited to a few centers and regions of the country, which prevented coverage for all newborns with risk factors. In 2018, the Cuban procedure for universal hearing screening and comprehensive hearing health management was designed, validated, and implemented. The objective of this paper was to describe the specifics of this procedure. To this end, the concepts were presented, the target population was defined, and the timing of the evaluation was established. The general principles, the functioning of the multidisciplinary team, the characteristics of the facilities, the availability and sustainability of the equipment, and the information for collecting statistical data were also outlined.
