Oropouche in Pediatrics: An Emerging Disease
Keywords:
arboviral disease; oropouche; infectious diseases; emerging diseases.Abstract
Introduction: There is a diversity of vector-borne diseases known as arboviruses. Among these is oropouche, a disease whose incidence has increased in Cuba.
Objective: To describe the aspects related to oropouche in pediatrics as an emerging disease.
Methods: A narrative review was conducted using a literature search of primary sources of information in PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Google Scholar, covering the period 2000-2024, in English and Spanish, on aspects related to the oropouche virus. Websites of international organizations, original articles, and review articles were examined. Those that were irrelevant or had significant methodological deficiencies were discarded. Different keywords were used, such as arboviruses, oropouche, infectious diseases, and emerging diseases.
Analysis and synthesis of the information: The etiological agent and its characteristics were presented. The modes of transmission, clinical manifestations and their severe forms, the complementary studies evaluated to date, the differential diagnosis with respect to other infectious diseases, and the main pillars of treatment, with an emphasis on prevention, were described.
Conclusions: Oropouche is an arboviral disease considered an emerging disease in Cuba, with clinical signs that are difficult to differentiate from other infectious diseases and limited information in the pediatric population. Vertical transmission is possible, and laboratory diagnosis and treatment are nonspecific. It is characterized by epidemic outbreaks with self-limiting clinical manifestations, which can be severe in some cases.
