Abstract

Introduction: It is important to emphasize that the early years of life represent a great opportunity for effective mental health promotion through adaptive coping.

Objective: To pilot the “Coping with Everyday Life” intervention with a group of children between 4 and 6 years of age, to increase functional coping and to reduce stress, as well as internalizing and externalizing problems.

Methods: The study was conducted in a public school in southern Mexico City and included 65 children. A pre- and post-intervention assessment was conducted using the Daily Stress and Coping Scales for Preschoolers, and the Behavioral Questionnaire for Children Aged 1.5 to 5 Years. The Wilcoxon t-test and Cohen's d test were used to evaluate the results.

Results: The results show an increase in functional coping and a decrease in the depression/anxiety scale after the intervention. No significant differences were observed in children's daily stress or other internalizing or externalizing problems, although these did decrease after the intervention.

Conclusions: The results of the pilot study indicate that the intervention can be used to promote adaptive coping in preschoolers; it also suggests the need for a control group to evaluate its effectiveness.
