Childhood Tuberculosis in Havana between 2023 and 2024

Abstract

Introduction: In Cuba, tuberculosis declined during the pandemic years, with a post-pandemic increase in all age groups.

Objective: To describe the behavior of childhood tuberculosis in Havana.

Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study was conducted on the 27 cases of childhood tuberculosis reported between January 2023 and December 2024, based on data from the Directorate of Medical Records and Health Statistics, the National Reference Center for Childhood Tuberculosis, and epidemiological surveys. Demographic, clinical, and epidemiological variables, microbiological confirmation, and case follow-up were studied.

Results: After a decline during the pandemic, the childhood tuberculosis rate increased in Havana and throughout the country in 2023 and 2024. The 2024 incidence in the capital doubled that of 2023, with a 6.5-fold increase in children under five years of age and a fivefold increase in schoolchildren. In both years, pulmonary tuberculosis predominated and diagnosis was made by GeneXpert. In 2024, the source of infection was identified in 77.8%, 55.5% of cases were reported through contact studies, one death was reported, and shortened treatment was successfully initiated.

Conclusions: Havana presented an increase in incidence with a rising trend. Work must continue on the actions of the Control Program, with integration of primary care, the National Reference Center, and the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology.
