Abstract

Introduction: Common arterial trunk is a rare congenital heart malformation. It is characterized by the presence of a single arterial vessel emerging from the heart, giving rise to the systemic, pulmonary, and coronary circulations. The natural history of this congenital heart disease shows that patients who are born and do not undergo surgical treatment have a poor prognosis.

Objective: To describe the case of a newborn girl with critical common arterial trunk heart disease.

Case report: We present the case of a newborn girl diagnosed with common arterial trunk. This was the first case diagnosed in the neonatal period in the province in the last 25 years. The clinical and echocardiographic findings, as well as the initial therapeutic approach, are described, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and emergency treatment.

Conclusions: Common arterial trunk is considered a rare and critical heart disease. Imaging studies, such as chest X-ray and echocardiogram, enable early diagnosis, which is crucial for patient survival and quality of life.
