Abstract

Introduction: Iron-deficiency anemia is considered a serious public health problem in Peru. National strategies and plans are developed to intervene and reduce its high prevalence, which remains permanent over time. It is necessary to consider the association of other maternal-infant factors potentially involved in the development of this disease.

Objectives: To determine the maternal-infant factors associated with iron- deficiency anemia in infants in Peru.

Methods: Observational, analytical and retrospective study through the analysis of the demographic and family health survey carried out in Peru in 2019. Prevalence ratios were used. The sample size was 11,952 infants aged 6 to 36 months. The statistical software SPSS 25 was used for bivariate statistical analysis and Stata for multivariate analysis. A value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results: The risk factors associated with iron-deficiency anemia were: living in the sierra region (PR: 1.39; CI: 1.24-1.55; p<0.000), living in the jungle region (PR:1.23; CI: 1.1029-1.37; p<0.000), to present diarrhea (PR:1.16; CI: 1.09-1.25 p<0.000) and being poor (PR: 1.29; CI:1.20-1.38; p<0.000).

Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia found is high. Living in the mountain and jungle regions, being poor and having had diarrhea in the last two weeks are significantly associated with anemia in Peruvian children younger than 36 months. Male sex and exclusive breastfeeding are associated with a lower frequency of anemia.
