Abstract

Introduction: The labiopalatine fissure is one of the most common head and neck malformations in humans. This congenital alteration caused by embryological defects is associated with several environmental and genetic risk factors. These patients present multiple anatomical, aesthetic and functional alterations that can be accompanied by dental anomalies.

Objectives: Determine dental alterations in patients between 3 and 18 years old with labiopalatine fissure.

Methods: Prospective cross-sectional descriptive study in 31 patients with labiopalatine fissure attended by an outpatient maxillofacial consultation at "William Soler" Children's Hospital, from October 2018 to March 2020. The variables to be measured were: age, sex, type of facial fissure, dental alterations with time, number and space.

Results: 71.0 % of the patients presented labiopalatine fissure, with a predominance in the male sex, between the ages of 6 and 12 years. The most frequent dental anomalies were oligodontia in 69.7% and delay in tooth outbreak in 67.7%, which were significant and demonstrated a statistical association with the type of facial fissure that affects both the lip and palate.

Conclusions: In the children studied with labial, palatine and labiopalatine fissures, there is a predominance of labiopalatine fissures. The outstanding dental alterations were oligodancies, delays in tooth outbreak and dental rotations in labiopalatine fissures. The oligodontia and delays in the dental outbreak have specific correspondence with the type of fissure that involves the lip and palate.
