Abstract

Introduction: Type 1 diabetes mellitus has increased its incidence in many countries.

Objective: To describe the evolution of the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus in pediatric ages and its form of presentation.

Methods: A multicenter, descriptive, retrospective study was conducted in Havana during the period 2000-2014 in 496 patients, with ages from 0 to 18 years, whom were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The medical records of all patients were reviewed and the following data were collected: age at diagnosis, sex, month and year of diagnosis, and form of presentation of the disease. Percentages and incidence rates by age and sex groups were calculated.

Results: The mean incidence of the period in children under 15 years of age was 8.6 c/100 000 inhabitants-year, which increased compared to previous studies, without differences between sexes and in people over 15 years of age was 3.8 c/100 000 inhabitants-year, with a predominance of the male sex. The group of 10 to 14 years was the one that presented the highest incidence. Hyperglycemia without ketosis predominated as a form of presentation.

Conclusions: During the period 2000-2014, Havana constituted a region of intermediate incidence for type 1 diabetes mellitus in children under 15 years old, with a maximum in the group of 10 to 14 years. The presentation in diabetic ketoacidosis decreased as the patient's age increased.
