Childhood malignant pleuroperitoneal mesothelioma with high survival rate

Abstract

Introduction: Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of tumor, particularly in childhood. About 80% are pleural with aggressive behavior. Case presentation: a patient with limb asymmetry is presented who was diagnosed with pleuro-peritoneal mesothelioma in infancy at 12 years of age, a right pneumopleurectomy plus partial peritonectomy was performed, and adjuvant chemotherapy (cisplatin-pemetrexed) and monoclonal antibody anti epidermal growth factor receptor, nimotuzumab, in maintenance regimen. He recurs at 10 years with retreatment of chemotherapy and nimotuzumab with a high median survival. Conclusions: Malignant mesothelioma is a rare tumor in young adults. The prognosis is unfavorable, without treatment it is estimated a survival of less than one year in some clinical-pathological varieties.
