COVID-19 Pediatric Patients Hospitalized in Intensive Care: Medical Challenges, Family and Resilience

Introduction: In the New Millennium, humanity had to fight against one of the great pandemics in history, which impacted the entire society. Data on how COVID-19 affects children are still evolving. Objective: To update scientific knowledge on what the medical challenges have been during the care of COVID-19 pediatric patients, hospitalized in critical units, as well as the challenges the family has to face and the coping strategies implemented by health personnel. Methods: Thirty-two articles selected by non-probabilistic convenience sampling were reviewed, through the Boolean operators AND and OR, in Scopus, SciELO, PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Critical review and the inductive method were used. Results: During the COVID-19 pandemic, multidisciplinary health teams faced different challenges and acted according to the available resources, experiences, and management of protocols established according to the national policies of each country. The change in family routine significantly impacted the biopsychosocial status of pediatric patients. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic set a standard for organizations, governments, and institutions to prepare to effectively and efficiently address health problems. The family plays a fundamental role in coping and resilience in these types of situations.Downloads
