Abstract

Introduction: Domestic violence is linked to psychological and behavioral problems, which increase the possibility of young people engaging in violent behavior. However, the lack of scientific evidence makes it difficult to implement effective prevention and management strategies. Objective: To determine the association between family functionality and adolescent violence in students from a public institution in the Peruvian Amazon. Methods: An observational-analytical and prospective cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of 132 students, under 18 years of age, from a public educational institution in the city of Iquitos, Peru. Scales such as the family APGAR and a validated scale for measuring adolescent violence were applied. Results: 69.7% of adolescents reported having experienced some type of violence. Regarding family functionality, 36.4% of respondents presented a dysfunctional family. Family functionality is therefore associated with adolescent violence (p = 0.029; OR: 2.5; 95% CI: 1.1-5.9). Conclusions: Family functionality should be addressed as part of the actions focused on preventing and reducing violence among adolescents.
