Abstract

Introduction: Retention of the upper canines is one of the most frequent orthodontic-surgical problems, with a high incidence in the general population. Objective: To characterize a patient with bilateral retention of the upper canines. Case report: A 13-year-old school patient was treated in the Maxillofacial Surgery Service at Manuel Ascunce Domenech University Hospital in Camagüey, in 2018. An interdisciplinary consultation was conducted with Comprehensive General Stomatology, Periodontics and Orthodontics, as well as a clinical study (interrogation and physical examination). The clinical absence of the crown of the upper canines 13 and 23 was observed. This was confirmed with a panoramic radiographic view. A surgical procedure was followed, with the discovery of the crowns of the canines and the elimination of the bone obstacle that prevented the eruption of these dental organs. Subsequently, brackets and wire traction were placed to mobilize the retained canines towards their normal position in the dental arch. Conclusions: Bilateral retention of the upper canines is rare in the child population that attends dental services. Its close association with oligodontia or absence of lateral incisors in its etiopathogenesis was evident. The orthodontic-surgical variant was the most appropriate treatment method for this case.
