Biomarkers of Inflammation in Cuban Children with SARS-Cov-2 Infection in Intensive Care, in San Miguel Del Padrón
Keywords:
SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 in severe pediatric patients, biomarkers.Abstract
Introduction: Patients with COVID-19 disease may present different symptoms and health problems. The use of biomarkers makes it possible to interpret the progression of the disease, perform a more defined categorization of patients and intervene early. Objective: To describe the altered biomarkers in pediatric patients with COVID-19 in severe and critical condition. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional cohort study was carried out in children diagnosed with COVID-19 in intensive care, from April 2020 to June 2021, from Havana. A total of 83 children were selected through non-probabilistic sampling. Results: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and procalcitonin remained elevated at all ages and exceeded 70%. Interleukin was the third most representative analytical marker, with the highest incidence in patients between 15 and 18 years (61%). D-dimer was elevated in children under one year of age (50%). The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio had higher incidence in adolescents (28%) and ferritin in those under one year of age (25%). Conclusions: The inflammation markers that stood out in the research were erythrocyte sedimentation rate, procalcitonin, interleukin, D-dimer, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and ferritin. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, procalcitonin and D-dimer had a higher incidence in critically ill patients. In these children, the average values that reached the highest values were ferritin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and procalcitonin.Downloads
