Abstract

Introduction: The nutritional status in the child influences the immune capacity of the organism; its deterioration is a risk factor for acute respiratory infections.

Objective: To determine the impact of an educational intervention on nutritional risk in relatives of children with acute respiratory infections.

Methods: Research-action study with educational intervention on nutritional risk in relatives of children with acute respiratory infections who attended the emergency service of "Ángel Arturo Aballí" Maternal and Child Hospital, January 2018-January 2020. The universe was of 526 patients and the non-probabilistic sample of 377 patients. Nutritional assessment and an interview were carried out to obtain the variables: nutritional risk (protein-energy malnutrition and thinness), age, sex, inadequate breastfeeding practices and knowledge of family members. An intervention consisting of seven educational sessions was applied and knowledge was reassessed. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used for p≤ 0.05.

Results: Children with nutritional risk predominated: 256 (68 %), between 1 and 5 years, female (52.79 %), without exclusive breastfeeding (73.47 %), with a statistically significant association between the presence of nutritional risk and age. Before the intervention, the level of knowledge in the mothers was insufficient (25.46%), with a statistically significant change at the end of the study (89.92%) (p= 0.001).

Conclusions: A positive impact was obtained by achieving significant changes in the level of knowledge of mothers about nutritional risk in patients with acute respiratory infections.
