Introduction: Pulmonary hydatidosis is a parasitic zoonosis of worldwide distribution, with greater presence in rural areas and associated with low socio-economic status.
Objective: To describe the epidemiological, clinical, radiological characteristics and medical complications of pulmonary hydatidosis in children.
Methods: Descriptive and retrospective study conducted at "Ramiro Prialé Prialé" National Hospital located in the city of Huancayo, Peru. 36 medical records were reviewed and it was collected data of interest from a period of 5 years, 2015 to 2019, of patients diagnosed with pulmonary hydatidosis who met the inclusion criteria. For data processing the statistical package of SPSS ver. 24 was used.
Results: The mean age was 8.5 years, the male sex predominated (63.90 %), also the rural origin (83.30 %), and there was a history of dog breeding (83.33 %). The most commonly reported symptoms were cough, fever and dyspnea; less frequent were hemoptysis, chest pain and vomiting cough. The predominant signs were dullness and decreased breathing noise during lung examination. The single hydatid cyst was found in 52.80% and the location in the right lung in 59.30 %. The most frequent medical complication was pericystic pneumonia in 83.30 %.
Conclusions: In children from endemic areas, with symptoms of fever, cough and dyspnea, with radiological image suggestive to a single cyst located in the right lung and close contact with dogs, pulmonary hydatidosis should be ruled out.
